Sir David Attenborough: The Truth About Climate Change

What happen just before 1900s?
Isn't Al'Gore house a massive pollutant?

Should I do a proper post with research rather than this lazy one as a resurrection?

Look at the graph before 1900s something massive happen and it gets my interest more than the current nobel news :P

History of the Middle Finger

A friend in facebook (one of those that i saw once and thats it) posted the following story:

--
Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future.

This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" (or "pluck yew").

Much to the bewilder ment of the French, the English ! won a m ajor upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew!

Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative F, and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute!

It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird." IT IS STILL AN APPROPRIATE SALUTE TO THE FRENCH TODAY!

And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing!!!!!!!
--

However wikipedia does not mention it... so I guess its not true :P
Does mention another salute though.

Mhe still interesting so I'm posting it to save for later

Parents visit and presents

So, lets see what I can post before boss starts running around the lab.

So last weekend my parents visited given the special occasion ... and no its not about the longest day on summer... and so I got to see them again.
Which is kinda funny, at the beginning you start laughing at parents being parents again, mom arranging everything and overall telling you what to do... then it gets kinda annoying again :P
I'm such a bad son.

Anyways back on track they visited me, and got to see the University... unfortunately it was a rainy day so we didn't do much walking.

That is the building I'm working at the moment.

Hey I took a picture with my mom also and I can not find it... so I will post about her on the this one.

Taken at Bubba Gump restaurant in Chicago. Yes expensive, but heck... its my b-day :P
I order one of the kids drinks that lets you keep the drink :)

So we also took a tour though the river was pretty nice... and then we had to go shopping :(

Anyways on my way back I got cards and a cool presents from my Bro and sis-in-law YAY.

Grim Fandango, one of the greatest games of all time metabelieve it ... which I thought it was point and click but I have to control my character through Gamepad or numpad... its odd.
Anyways just the voices that they have are funny.

My brother plan was to keep me from WoW... but my new best friend, who I've never met, although rumor has it that might change, decided to give me the expansion :P

Now I have to play both to keep everyone happy :P

Now... to find time for ME and play Company of Heroes... :P

Too many :P

So much to do so little time... in the morning

Finally

well not really, don't see things changing, but this interesting article on digg

Though truth be told... I didn't finish reading it :P

gotta love these part

"The rational way to understand this is that ordinary, oppressed Americans are in a deep psychological state of self-delusion. Despite all the empirical, objective evidence of a failed government, they fail to see rebellion opportunities. Many still believe they live in the world’s best democracy."

"Why is there insufficient pain for revolution? This is a deadly serious issue. What is historically unique about America is that even the most oppressed and unfairly treated people are distracted by affordable materialism, entertainment, sports, gambling, and myriad other aspects of our frivolous, self-absorbed culture. Even failed school and health care systems do not drive people, paying enormous sums to fill up their SUVs, to rebellion. So, Americans are aware of their oppression, but the power elites have successfully drugged them with a plethora of pleasure-producing distractions sufficient to keep them under control."

I got mail

and mail in a real life mailbox... and by mailbox I mean that hole I'm pointing at in the picture.

So not much to brag... BUT BUT... unlike those in Biology or MCMP (I forgot what that stands for) My hole is my hole... not a hole for all those with a last name starting with a C.
SO, you can not see it in the pic, and the close up pic didn't show my best side so I'm not posting it, but the hole I'm pointing at has my name and ONLY my name.

MUAHAHAHAHAHA.... next step... graduation :)

What to do?

You know how we all kid around about how hard and difficult life as a PhD is... complain about the weekend hours, non helpful boss, lack of any life outside the lab... but we know that we really spend our time blogging, not working, and who are we kidding, we wouldn't have a life anyways since we would be blogging and playing video games in our free time.

But what to do when you get to know someone that REALLY REALLY hates her job.
Completely tired of what she is doing, and only in second year.
Hates her boss
Hater her lab
And it is a definite true feeling, no sarcasm

I thought it was just before the qualifiers stress, but that one long gone... still the feeling persist.

What do you say to this person? How can you make their life less miserable?
What would you guys do?

EEK

"the Academy" also pointed out that exclusion of children from drug studies was more unethical than clinical testing, and could lead to devastating results.

The antibiotic chloramphenicol was released in the 1950s without adequate testing in infants and children. As use of the drug became more common, reports of a serious and often fatal reaction called the Grey Baby Syndrome surfaced. This reaction was related to slow clearance of the drug in infants as compared to adults, due to deficiency in hepatic glucuronyl transferase in infants. Similarly, though less devastating, widespread use of tetracycline in children was subsequently shown to be associated with dental dysplasia.

OH the one I've heard

Death on Gene Therapy Trial

In the fall of 1999, 18-year-old Jesse Gelsinger died as a result of his participation in a gene transfer trial. Jesse had a rare metabolic disorder, ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency syndrome (OTC) that was being controlled by medication and diet. Researchers were testing an innovative technique using adenovirus gene transfer. Shortly after treatment Jesse Gelsinger experienced multiple organ failure and subsequently died. This case catapulted research with human subjects into the national media. Serious concerns related to conflict of interest, data safety monitoring, and informed consent have made the Gelsinger case a contemporary illustration of continued doubts about the ethical integrity of research with human subjects. This case has instigated deliberations on all these controversial topics at the national level. The outcome of the discussions has yet to be determined.

Hmm wikipedia has more info than the crappy citi test I'm taking

Random trash talk: "Stynky you really want to keep eating herbicide fill, genetically modified animals and plants?"

Obedience to Authority Study (Milgram Study)

The purpose of this study was to determine response to authority in normal humans. The researchers told recruited volunteers that the purpose was to study learning and memory. Each subject was told to teach a "student" and to punish the students' errors by administering increasing levels of electric shocks. The "student" was a confederate of the researcher who pretended to be a poor learner and mimicked pain and even unconsciousness as the subject increased the levels of electric shock. 63% of the subjects administered lethal shocks; some even after the "student" claimed to have heart disease. Some of the subjects, after being "debriefed" from the study experienced serious emotional crises.

Ethical Problems: deception, unanticipated psychological harms.

OK, no idea or references on this one... but kind of funny... hmm... guess I shouldn't be a scientist.

To be just... in research

OK, so I haven't read all of this, but it is kind of funny what I just read.
"Who ought to receive the benefits of research and bear its burdens? This is a question of justice ... conceiving the principle of justice is that equals ought to be treated equally. However, this statement requires explication. Who is equal and who is unequal?"

ON the plus side... now I want to keep reading instead of cheating and press next to see what weird things I find :P

Edit one:
My MDs during my history
The first century physician Celsus justified experiments on condemned criminals in Egypt using wording that became a classic defense for hazardous experimentation: "It is not cruel to inflict on a few criminals sufferings which may benefit multitudes of innocent people through all centuries."

Worthy of a LOOOONG trip here

An act that says....

sigh. They don't have Nightwing annual 2... guess I'll never know why he didn't marry Oracle after all.

OK, little time left, lets go to the sears tower, it is a weekday so it must be empty

D'oh

hour later

Oh well... time to go home
I take the 5pm train, I shall be there by 9ish

turns out this pic is taken at 12 midnight...

Cargo trains get priority over passangers, Amtrak gets to sue the railroad owners but the small fine they pay is nothing compare to whatever they make by making pass tons of cargo trains before us.
The free market has spoken and they prefer overstock walmarts than strangers getting home on time.
People could rise and be heard by their congressmen ... but people have gone lazy, complaisant.
And the new French president is not a socialist :(

Back to comics

Now that it seems I have secured a lab in which to procrastinate the next years of my life, I can come back to serious geek matters.

Superheroes time :D They are SOOO COOL, I mean, now that they have learned from Anime battles, we get stuff like this video I can't stop watching.

AWESOME

Now lets move to THE FLASH... an overlook hero now a days.

OH Batman is so sweet... his strenght is laughable compare to the rest, but still he tries.

Flash has so much untap power... I mean imagine something hitting you at the SPEED OF TIME

OK all this to ask you guys.

A) Should I buy Civil War?
I dunno if stynky ever finish it...but even If I have spoil myself the ending, I know the writer Mark Millar does a great job on writing around political subjects. I'm kind of intrigue how it develop to the end we even heard on the Colber't report.
and
B) Should I buy WORLD WAR III ?
Not as big event as Civil War or as last year Infinite crisis. But ... uhm.... see the title of the comic?? That should be enough.
However only in one of the four book, do they explain why did aquaman went through so DRASTIC changes.

So what shall I go for?

Choosing a LAB

To join, or to drop out of Purdue... that is the question.

After 4 rotation, I'm like "mhe... sure I guess I could work on either research for my next # years" (# cause... u know :P)

So first runner up
Sophie's LAB

Pros:
Organized, has graduated 3 students all ready, 2 went post-doc, one went industry.
Connections in Berkeley, collaborations with Comparative Oncology Program in PURDUE (One that looks to cure cancer in dogs and humans :D)
Only lab with a Post-doc
Lab will be very international (China, Japan, India, France)
Has all ready told me won a grant to support me for 3 years.
Cons:
Lab safety FREAK... I can't walk in with a bottle of water, have to wear coat all time, and seems she can get pretty angry at times :(
After summer when Lesly leaves... gonna be an all guys lab :(

Second Runner up
Claudio's Lab
Pros:
New lab... according to stynky, that means I'll get push to work hard
The guy has read the Dark Knight Returns.
uh...wow running out of things... guess the fact that has new equipment should count, cooler than developing films old school.
CONS
New lab... dunno if he graduates people in time.
Lab mate kind of arrogant.
Funding seems not certain.

Third runner up
Dr Harrison's LAB
Pros:
She is SOO NICE, she reminds me of my grandmother.
and thats about it... the lab is so old, she doesn't know much whats going with her students, the only one that I saw was advancing on her project is an UBERNERD... you would be by yourself in that lab... I still need help, not that independent.
Also lost technician recently :(

Fourth:
Dr Muhammed Lab
Pros:
Coolest lab mates of my rotations (NO, they are no geeks... I'm in biology remember?) But still really crazy and nice.
Cons:
The fancy equipment they have I had to learn how to use it by calling the company...she didn't know how to work with something her lab promotes is their expertise ... kinda dissapointing.
At the beginning she had student waste their time in a useless endevour
Promise a raised to a technician which she never got. They still seem to get along, but there is tension, I feel it.

So you see... That is what I came up with for now, I'll see if something new worth mentioning comes up... so the First lab seems the best.
Any questions?
Comments?
Suggestions?

D'oh they are pushing me

So I formatted my PC since it was acting too weird...
But again... my fancy motherboard drivers for dual core seems to need service pack 2.
The antivirus that Purdue can give me needs Service Pack 1
AMD dual core optimizer seems to need also service packs.

People tell me... u can get windows here for like $15

But just like I don't want to pay monthly fee, I don't want to give any ANY money to microsoft... I've been trained by my brother too well in this.

But they are pushing it since everything seems to need it, and my bro doesn't get me a service pack...

The greatest game I never played is coming back

Shameful thing to accept it, since I call myself a sonic fan, but one of the most beloved games by old school Sega fans its Nights into dreams (Seems the wikipedia entry is the best). A game I never played but I've heard about it for so long, and the concept is so cool, that after the news of it being released for the Wii, (kotaku seganerds )makes me want to get a Wii and experience it.

Plus I have to show stynky something artistic beautiful and original (story wise/ not gameplay... although I remember a family game about dreams... stynky refresh my memory please) that I'm playing, since he keeps bragging about the awesome OKAMI.

Just by looking at the pictures I want to play.

Change from gaming to serious news

I learned about this website on my new favorite website... digg.

Now we all knew not to generalize the action of Israel as those of the Jewish community, but what I find fascinating is that, as I would gather it, this are Jewish people against not only the actions of war, but the actual state of Israel, good for me cause how the state was formed, its questionable.

Digg it here

Quick edit on previous posts

First the shot of me been thrown in the air by mighty Ghaz
I'm in bear form to withstand such an attack.

Second the ULTIMATE UNIT from ALterac Valley.
Finnally I got in a game that summon him... starts a bit weak, the ones near him are actuallly guarding him from any alliance attack.

But after he starts charging, he gets stronger with every kill.... by the time we were on alliance main base, the lil dood look like this:

Small change, aight?

WAR update

This time, Alterac Valley. The Battleground for when you reach level 51.
Essentially a copy...ahem... omage to DoTA and Rival Nations I would say.

(Is my link to rivala nations the right one? They seem to have change a lot)

Anyways... For those that played those mods... mainly stynky... you can see on the official webpage how in this battlegroud lets you arrange armies for assault like in the mods, also you can upgrade your units like you did in Rival Nations, and upgrade yourself like you did in both.
However you don't win by destroying the enemy stronghold but by killing the enemy general... who is in a stronghold :P

This weekend is Alterac Valley weekend which means bonus honor for those who play and thus, more games to play arround. This is good in AV since this battleground requires 40 ppl on each side.... Yes, 40, not 10 like warsong gulch, or 15 like Arathi Basin, but 40 players on each side, so it could be a nice battle everytime, that could go even better if all those damn 7 out of the 8 million WoW users had played some strategy before.
I say this cause with all the possibilities that the battlegrounds gives you to make and organize assault, all you get is 40 ppl rushing to the enemy base and start hacking and slashing untill they might get the general.... /sigh

I might go out and yell... "You lets try and summon the elite unit" ... and all i get in replys are... " &^$% just come here help us kill the general noob"
/sigh

Still from time to time you find one that has played Warcraft and also agrees on helping you at least upgrade our defense units.

So with all the good and bad... I'm going to AV since one of the rewards is an epic mount, and I still need to learn more from this battleground.

WoW Update.... Cancelling

First I don't want to keep paying monthly fee, I never had to do so for Diablo and original Warcrafts.
Second I have to show stynky that I'm unable to get an A on Cancer biology because it seems I reach my intellect threshold rather than too much WoW.

And
so it is cancelled. I dunno If i haven't cancelled too many things in
life, but see the picture? I was kind of amazed how much they taunt you
to stay.
-Peon Cry
-They ask u why u leave, and give u a way to stay (In my case I said too
expensive, and went on to write to them as they suggested in the
cancelling section. They haven't replied with the so call alternative
forms of payment... so much for customer care)
-And u don't see it in the pic, but below there were some characters with the begging animation.

I still be posting about Wow untill the 27 when my account expires.

On other worthy notes:
Lord Henry went on and state the truth once more so bluntly.
"A man can be happy with any woman, as long as he does not love her"
and there was another quote i liked but have forgotten.

Had forgotten about Justice the comic book, saw that I was missing two issues and bought it... trully old school good vs evil battleroyal where evil makes stupid choices when they could be winning... but still nice art :P

Anyways it ends... for now, I still have to use your game card :P

WoW update of the weekend

Fighting Gharz'rilla

The big Lizard thingy u c up there (Gonna use chat writing for this posts)

Really not that impressive, as boss fights go, there is a similar one at the end of BFD instance.
The thing is that is one boss u actually have to finish a looong tough quest outside the instance to be able to summon it.
And a cool thing (If you are high level to withstand it) Is that he can Knock you out into the air for like over1k hp damage, but u get an awesome view of everything in the air... I tried to take a picture of when he does that, but never manage to capture it in time... oh well, some other time.

WoW Wedding

And I'm the best man for the second time in my life ... woot!

Stupid free software labeling their work... does anyone know of a good program to play with tga files?

Anyways about the wedding it was kind of a joke from 2 ppl in our guild.
Still we went ahead an RAIDed SM Cathedral.
OK, guess that calls for explanation. By raiding I mean a group of more than 5 people on a team... in our case it was just 10 cause that zone SM (Scarlet Monastery) Doesn't allow for more. With this group we went ahead and assaulted a Cathedral that is held by humans that have gone mad and kinda resemble an inquisition burning innocents and all that in the name of... hmm I dunno... all I care is that we needed their Cathedral, so we went ahead and killed them all to have the ceremony :P

YAY THE GEEKNESS.

UGH didn't get the A

Yesterday I had the last chance to see why in one class I didn't got an A... In the end I had B+, A, B and an average homework according to the professor... that meant I was the cut off line between A and B =(.
There was a question in the final that I didn't answer and he asked to me again, but I was such and Idiot that didn't bother on looking notes or anything before going there, so I obviously got it wrong ... =(

In the end I felt Kinda pathetic begging for the A, lets see if this semester I can just get the A and don't have any need to go talk to professors EVER AGAIN!

On other news I was logging in and just upgraded to the new blogger.... haven't seen anything new except this

The New Version of Blogger
The new version of Blogger in beta is dead!
Long live the new version of Blogger!
(P.S. The old version of Blogger is not dead, but it would like to retire for a little while... maybe go to Hawaii or play World of Warcraft all day? It begs you to let it play World of Warcraft all day.)
