I thought small genes are the product of unnatural selection... people like you who think small dogs are cute help maintain the weaker species :-P
Actually I think so as well :-P
Yo... small means SNEACKY... if mammals would've been as large as dinosaurs, then we wouldn't be here.
And who knows, all of us that had small dogs know that they have a "bad temper" and start barking at every dog larger than them... who know... is we let them loose they might even win, since the large dog usually ignores them :P
Although that didn't work with Layka, cause once a 7 month old rottweiler playing with layka got her too scared too keep on barking :P
OH and yeah I'm pretty sure that now we have selected small artificially for dogs.
Still small might give a better "fit" on some enviroments, which eventually by Natural selection will fix the gene.
